Nightmares?

First, let me just say WOW! I think I might be (if possible) more confused on the carseat issue now, but thank you all so much for your tips and information!!!

I have another question for you all...

This might sound silly, but can babies have nightmares? I'm convinced B has nightmares. He will wake up sometimes screaming bloody murder and just so upset. It can take awhile to calm him down when he's like that. He will look around as though expecting to see something other than his room or me...it's like he's having ACH flashbacks. Is that possible?

It is a possibility although kiddos are a little older and they are called night terrors for them. It is harder form them to get calmed down b/c like you said they might not realize their surroundings.

I think all kiddos go through it though.

I thought AJU5 had them at about 7-8 months. She would cry (as loud as she ever did) in her sleep. Then she would wake up and need to snuggle to calm down even. Now at 20 months we think they are back occasionally, as she will wake in the middle of the night and just need to see us and realize where she is before she will go back to sleep.

My oldest used to have a hard time sleeping at night. She would wake up a few times a night screaming and we couldn't figure out why. Up until she was 8 months old, we had a night light in her room (mainly for my benefit, so I could see her when I went in to check on her or when I needed to go in and calm her) It turned out the night light was the issue. As soon as we took it out of her room, she slept perfectly! I never used a night light again! Not even with my other two kids!

So, if you have a night light in his room, I would try taking it out and see if that is the issue. If not, I hope it is just a phase that he outgrows soon!!

I believe it's possible and I would pray over him and his room every evening.

My daughter had what is called "night terrors." I don't remember how old she was when they started, but I definitely noticed they were worse when she was super tired. The pediatrician said she wasn't actually awake and it was best to leave her in her bed (despite the terrible crying) because it could agitate her worse and possibly make it last longer if we picked her up. I don't think I ever left her in her crib though. The crying was too intense. She eventually grew out of it.

Yep sounds like a night terror. My 7 yr old used to have them. There was only one night we couldn't get him calmed down and that was when he started attacking the blind in his sleep. They will grow out of it.

Whenever my kids wake up screaming it's usually because they're getting ear infections.....sometimes they do have nightmares, too though! Poor little guy!

My son also had night terrors. He would wake up every 1 1/2 hours for weeks on end. As it turned out, he had severe reflux which was causing the night terrors. (We found this out after a barrium (sp?) swallow test and exploratory surgery.) Once we found out what was causing the reflux, we eliminated those foods, and the night terrors ceased.

My mom told me that my oldest brother started having the "night terrors" at about 8months. He would do just what B is doing with you now. You may want to talk with the Pediatrician to seek some professional advise. But it sounds like "night terrors" to me. Poor little guy.

I am not sure if they can if you ask your pediatrician, but my little girl did the same thing. It is a terribly helpless feeling. Also, on the carseat, I have the Britax Marathon that is forward or rear facing and goes 5-65 pounds. We have 2 of them and LOVE it. It is a little pricey but the perks and safety are so worth it. FYI, I saw them last week at Target on sale and that is very rare.

My good friends had a little boy in the NICU and he had night terrors as a baby also--apparently it can be a residual effect of the NICU stay for some babies...he did eventually outgrow them though ( he is now three).

I think it actually is possible. A good friend of mine has a 6 month old and she swears he has bad dreams sometimes.

Will be keeping your little one in my prayers tomorrow!

Elijah does the same thing sometimes.

I believe that little ones can have nightmares. When my oldest was 13 months old we moved into a new house. Shortly after moving she woke up scared out of her mind. It had to be a nightmare. She hated her crib after that. We ended up converting her crib to the daybed. That seemed to help. That way if she was scared she could get out of bed and come into our room. Don't know if it was a dream or the fact that she was in a new room. It took months for us to get her able to fall asleep in her own room. Looking back I don't know if allowing her to come in our room was the best parenting decision. So YES, I firmly believe that kids can have nightmares.

My BFF's son had really bad terrors when he was on high doses of reflux meds; once they stopped those, he was good to go for 10 hours of sleep a night!!

Been reading your blog from the beginning but never posted! But I've gone through the same thing . . . at about the same age as B, my son Cohen went through the same thing. I took him to the pediatrician because I was worried about ear infection. Was told it was probably separation anxiety that he was experiencing in the middle of the night and would eventually outgrow. They told me night terrors happened at a later age, but I still think Cohen goes through those every now and then. Now, the last month or so, it has happened 2 different nights (including last night) and it has turned out to be the beginning of ear infections (took him in today and he has a small one). So check with your pediatrician if unsure . . . that's what they're there for. At least that's what I have to tell myself when I call with random questions!

My niece used to have night terrors when she was around a year old. They are gone now for the most part. But they are def capable of having nightmares.

I'm sure it's possible to have nightmares, but as I was reading through the comments & saw the ear infections comment - that's the only way we ever knew Wells had an ear infection b/c he never ran fever or anything else. Just would wake up screaming and as soon as we propped him up a little, he'd go back to sleep.

yes they do...all my kids(all 4) did at some time or another) They say to keep them in check no sugar, sugarly drink a couple hours before bedtime.

Coco was a little older but she had night terrors. I remember calling children's hospital in the middle of the night because I couldn't get her to wake up, but her eyes were open and she didn't want us to hold her. Scary but they didn't happen often.

My son did that when he was a baby. It was AWFUL! You'd think he was awake and knew what was going on but really he wasn't. CRAZY! As a parent it's unnerving, but this too shall pass. :)

Absolutely. And a lot of children have night terrors where they are not actually awake and its recommended not to wake them, just keep an eye and make sure they don't hurt themselves and comfort them if they do wake.

I have a friend and both of her boys suffer from night terrors.

Our daughter, now 2 1/2 had night terrors, not sure exactly how old she was, but she would start screaming so loud it scared me and then I would try to comfort her and she acted as if I wasn't there. It was very strange and very hard to watch happen, she would flail(sp?) herself all over her crib while screaming, she has since grown out of them, but it was a very scary thing for both of us.

Is it possible that he is having reflux problems at night that could be causing him pain? Some babies that lie flat get the stomach acid traveling up their esophagus that causes them pain. When a baby wakes up screaming in the night sometimes it helps to elevate the head of the bed 30 degrees. Just a thought...

Our daughter went through a phase where she'd wake up screaming bloody murder. We used to go in thinking something was wrong but it would confuse and agitate her even more. Turns out it is common for babies to do this... I read that even though their eyes are open, the best thing to do is leave them alone. What a huge difference! The first time we didn't go in, she just went back to sleep after a few minutes.

Only my youngest son used to do that. I called them 'night terrors' also (probably because it scared the heck out of ME too - none of my 3 oldest kids did it.) It was like he wasn't really awake even though his eyes were open and he was screaming and struggling against me. Sometimes it helped if I could get him to wake up a little more. (I had never heard about the recommendation to not wake them up in the previous comments. Oops.) The good news is he hasn't done it at all since he turned 2 in May so I'm sure it's just a stage B will grow out of.

Also, I'm so glad the surgery went well. And he really looked cute in his little hospital gown!

Both of my kids did that! They call it "night terrors" according to the pediatrician. We tried everything with my daughter who had them really bad! I finally found something that worked every single time. Anytime they had one, I put them to bed thirty minutes earlier the next night. That always did the trick. The doctor told me that it came from being overtired.
